World Secure Channel

Connection is EASY!

On this page you can always find information about connection to our servers for different operating system, such as WindowsXP, Windows Vista, Mac OS X 10, Linux.

Windows XP

  1. Start the "New Connection Wizard" (available in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Communications)
  2. Click "Next".
  3. Select "Connect to the network at my workplace".
  4. Select "Virtual Private Network connection".
  5. Enter a name for this connection.
  6. Enter the hostname or IP address: world-secure-channel.com or 67.205.111.78.
  7. Select either "do not dial" or "automatically dial" the initial connection. If you do not have a direct connection to the Internet, you may want to select your analog connection, ISDN, PPTP or PPPoE connection here. When you start the VPN connection Windows will then first dial your Internet connection. (Of course you can also choose "do not dial" and then manually start the Internet connection every time you want to use the VPN connection).
  8. Complete the Connection Wizard.
  9. A "Connect To..." window will pop up. Click "Properties".
  10. Verify the settings in the "General" tab. You entered these in the previous steps.
  11. Now select the "Options" tab.
  12. Select the "Security" tab. You will have to disable L2TP/PPP encryption (unless you want double encryption). There are two different ways of doing this:
  13. o Uncheck "Require data encryption". This is probably the easiest option but unfortunately it is also counterintuitive. Your users/customers might get the idea that this will make the VPN connection unsafe. This is of course not true: IPsec already does encryption. o Or you could select "Advanced (custom settings)" and then add CHAP to the allowed protocols. Set data encryption to "Optional". Then click "OK".
  14. While still on the "Security" tab, click "IPsec Settings". Enable the checkbox "Use pre-shared key for authentication". Enter the PSK provided in your control panel. Click "OK"
  15. Select the "Networking" tab. Change the type of VPN to "L2TP IPSec VPN". Click "OK". The TCP/IP protocol should be listed. Other protocols such as NWLink and NetBIOS will not work.
  16. Select the "Advanced" tab. Optionally you may activate Windows XP's Internet Connection Firewall or enable Internet Connection Sharing. Click "OK".
  17. You're back at the "Connect To..." window. Enter the username and password.
  18. Click "Connect".

Windows Vista

  1. Click "Start", and then "Control panel". Click "Network and Internet" (or switch to "Classic View").
  2. Start the "Network and Sharing Center".
  3. Click "Set up a connection or network".
  4. Select "Connect to a workplace".
  5. Optionally you can select an existing connection to run the new VPN connection over. If you do not have a direct connection to the Internet, you may want to select your analogue modem connection, ISDN, PPTP or PPPoE connection here. When you start the VPN connection Windows will then first dial your Internet connection. (Of course you can also choose "No, create a new connection" and then manually start the Internet connection every time you want to use the VPN connection).
  6. Select "Use my Internet connection (VPN)".
  7. Enter the (external) IP address or the hostname of server.(world-secure-channel.com) Also enter a name for this new VPN connection.
  8. Select "Don't connect now". Click "Next".
  9. Type your username and password
  10. Complete the Connection Wizard. Mind you, the connection is NOT yet ready to use.
  11. Back in the "Network and Sharing Center", select "Manage network connections".
  12. The "Network Connections" window appears. Select your newly created VPN connection. (You may notice that Vista defaults to PPTP).
  13. Use the right mouse button to select the context menu of the VPN connection. Click "Properties". There are 4 tabs: "General", "Options", "Security", "Networking" and "Sharing".
  14. Verify the settings in the "General" tab and the "Options" tab. You entered these in the previous steps. Normally you should not have to change these.
  15. Now select the "Security" tab. You should be able to use "Typical (recommended settings)"
  16. Select the "Networking" tab. Change the type of VPN to "L2TP IPSec VPN". Click "OK". The "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" is selected by default. If desired, uncheck the ones that you don't need.
  17. Click "IPsec Settings". Enable the checkbox "Use preshared key for authentication". Enter the PSK provided in your control panel (Mind you, it should be changed every month). Click "OK".
  18. Return to the "Network Connections" window.
  19. Select the VPN connection with the left mouse button. Use the right mouse button to select the context menu of the VPN connection. Click "Connect".
  20. You should now get a VPN connection. A window appears, asking what kind of network you are connecting to. In most cases this would be a "Home" network or a "Work" network. If you select "Public location", presumably the firewall settings for this connection will be more strict.
  21. Close the window "Successfully set network settings".
  22. You can now use your VPN connection.
  23. There is no separate icon for your active VPN connection in the bottom right corner (unlike Windows 2000/XP). There is only one icon for all connections. If you want to disconnect, you can click that icon and select the VPN connection. Alternatively, click "Disconnect" in the context menu of the VPN connection.

Mac OS X 10

  1. Open the Applications folder.
  2. Open "Internet Connect".
  3. If you see a padlock with the text "VPN (L2TP)", continue with the next step. If you do not see such a padlock, you have to add it: open the menu, choose "File" and then "New VPN Connection". You will be asked to choose between "L2TP over IPsec" and "PPTP". Select "L2TP over IPsec".
  4. Click on the padlock with the text "VPN (L2TP)".
  5. In the "Configuration" pull-down menu, select "Edit configurations...".
  6. Enter the "User Authentication" details for your VPN connection: the IP address 67.205.111.78 and the "Account Name"(actually your WSC user name). Mac OS X lists a number of user authentication options. You should first try CHAP. Enter your CHAP password in the "Password:" field.
  7. Enter your "Shared secret". This is the IPsec PSK provided in your control panel.
  8. Save settings.
  9. Click "Connect".
  10. You may be asked to enter your Keychain password.
  11. The L2TP/IPsec connection will be set up.
